Japanese corporation Panasonic has reported that hackers have compromised its internal network and gained illegal access to corporate data in a recent data breach.

The tech company issued a press release that its internal network was “illegally accessed by a third party” and that “some data on a file server had been accessed during the intrusion.” The press release stated the breach occurred on November 11. Contradicting this detail was Panasonic spokesman Dannea DeLisser statement where it was stated that the data breach started on June 22 and ended on November 3. Panasonic detected the data breach on November 11.

Panasonic was tight-lipped about the unauthorized access and shed light on its own investigation where the company is “currently working with a specialist third-party organization to investigate the leak and determine if the breach involved customers’ personal information and/or sensitive information; related to social infrastructure.”

“After detecting the unauthorized access, the company immediately reported the incident to the relevant authorities and implemented security countermeasures, including steps to prevent external access to the network,” it read. “Panasonic would like to express its sincerest apologies for any concern or inconvenience resulting from this incident.”

Several Japanese news outlets reported that the threat actors purportedly accessed customer and employee information until Panasonic detected the breach.

The attack on Panasonic’s server is part of a long series of other incidents involving Japanese companies in recent years. This attack was also not the first time that Panasonic got targeted. Its offices in India were ransomware victims, which wound up with the hackers releasing 4 gigabytes of data, which included financial and contact information.
