BALUN Video Transceivers for Twisted Pairs
Call us at:  800-360-4146
The TW Series of baluns allow video signals to be transmitted over unshielded twisted pair (UTP) telephone cable or CAT 5 cable. This means of video transmission provides significant savings when compared to traditional coaxial cable.
Twisted pairs are less expensive than coaxial cable. It may also be possible to use previously installed telephone cables with unused pairs. The UTP CAT5E cable, widely used in computer local area networks further increases the range of the devices and allows transmission of the signals from four cameras through the same cable.

How it works
A special type of transformer in the balun adapts the 75 Ohms unbalanced output of a camera to a signal suitable for a balanced twisted pair of 100 Ohms of impedance. At the other end of the twisted pair, another balun is installed in order to return to the 75 Ohms unbalaced output which can be connected to a coaxial cable compatible with the input of any monitor, VCR or multiplexer.

Due to the excellent balance provided by the TW series, the video signal will not affect or be affected by other signals, even when they are transmitted in contiguous pairs. You can transmit data, telephone signals or low voltage power using neighboring pairs without affecting video signal quality. Most of the electrical noise and RF interference which affect coaxial cables are eliminated.
PASSIVE BALUNS
Passive, non-amplified baluns have a range of up to 2000 feet (600 meters) over CAT5 cable or 1000 feet (300 meters) with regular unshielded twisted pair telephone cable.
TW-1000A Single Camera Balun: The TW-1000A has a thin 8½ inch (22 cm) long coaxial cable with a male BNC conector which allows it easily to reach the dome or multiplexer connector.

TWR-9S Rack Mounted 9 Balun Hub with Surge Suppression: The TWR-9S is the same as the TW-9R, with the addition of surge suppression on each input. More info
TWR-18 Rack Mounted 18 Balun Hub: The TWR-18 combines 18 baluns in a rack mounted unit. It takes 2 rack positions on a standard 19 inch rack.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS FOR PASSIVE BALUNS (TYPICAL VALUES)

Frequency response: : DC to 12 MHz Insertion losses: max 0.5 dB at 5 MHz Common mode rejection ratio: =60 dB from 15 KHz to 5 MHz. Impedance, coaxial side: 75 Ohms Impedance, balanced side:: 100 Ohms ± 20% Maximun signal voltage: 1 VPP

TW-3000R ACTIVE BALUN The TW-1000A is an amplified balun with a range of up to 5000 feet (1600 meters) over CAT5 cable or 3000 feet (1000 meters) with regular unshielded twisted pair telephone cable. For easy connection, the TW-3000R is placed near a monitor, multiplexer or DVR. The power terminals are connected to a 12V DC power source. The line terminals are connected to CAT5 or telephone cable leading to a camera. A TW-1000A passive balun connected to the camera adapts the 75 Ohms unbalanced output to a signal suitable for a balanced twisted pair of 100 Ohms impedance. When this signal is received by the TW-3000R, it is returned to the 75 Ohms unbalaced output which can be connected via a coaxial cable to the input of a monitor, VCR or multiplexer. More info
